A BRIEF HISTORY OF ENUGU STATE COLLEGE OF NURSING SCIENCES, ENUGU.
Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences (ESCONS) Parklane Campus is located within the premises of the University College Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Enugu (popularly and formerly known by the public as ESUT Teaching Hospital Parklane) in GRA, Enugu North L.G.A. of Enugu State. The College buildings are sited behind the hospital complex (precisely radiology unit and Medical Annex) and before the Pathology Department of College of Medicine. The Awgu Campus of the College is located inside the premises of Awgu District Hospital of Enugu State.
The history of the college cannot be told without tracing the history of the upgraded school of nursing and its mother hospital. Parklane Hospital (as it was called). Established in 1930 as a nursing home for colonial masters, Parklane Hospital over the years metamorphosed through a General Hospital, a Specialist Hospital into a Teaching Hospital.
In its course of growth, a 52 bedded Obstetrics and Gynecological building complex when completed and ready to be commissioned was converted by the State Government to a proposed School of Nursing Complex, due to observed acute shortage of nursing personnel to meet the health care needs of the population accessing care in the hospital.
This was under the leadership of Dr. Joy Ugwuegede, the then Honorable Commissioner for Health, Enugu State. Dr. Mrs. B. J. Orjichukwu and Mr. M.S.C. Chukwu, Director and Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery Service respectively who initiated actions towards realizing the goal of having a school of nursing. The actions of the ministry were also backed by the unflinching supports of the Chief Medical Director Dr. Kene, Chief Matron of the hospital Mrs. Ndiolo and her Deputy Mrs. Ejike.
Preliminary inspections of the school were made in August and September 1998, respectively. The inspection team from the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria led by Mr. Ujiri visited the school on 5th October 1998. The school took off formally on 2nd November 1998. On 11th February 1999 a letter conveying the approval to establish the school was released by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
On 19th April 1999 the school was officially commissioned by the then State Administrator, His Excellency Navy Capt. Adewumi Benson Agbaje (FSS, MSS, PSC) as a full-fledged School of Nursing. The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria permitted initial intake of 25 students but only 23 candidates who met the entry requirements were admitted to kick start the programme. Gradually, the students intake quota was increased to 50 and recently (March 2024) to 120 with the transition to College of Nursing.
December 2023 saw the birth of Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences. The existing Schools of Nursing (established February 1999) and Post Basic Midwifery Parklane (established April 2009), and the School of Basic Midwifery Awgu (established in 1957) were collapsed and upgraded to a College of Nursing Sciences with two Campuses at Parklane and Awgu respectively. All credits goes to the Almighty God who has used our Futuristic, Youth-Friendly, Able Governor-His Excellency Barr Peter Mbah to revamp the schools for the upgrade; indeed ‘Enugu’s Tomorrow Came in 2024’.
The indefatigable Special Adviser to the Governor on Health-Dr Yomi Jaye and our God-given Chief Medical Director Prof Bethrand Ngwu were pillars of support to the three dogged formers principals- Abigail Nneka Ude-Nebonta, Beatrice Ngozi Onovo and Theresa Nwamaka Agbo including the former Vice Principal Admin. (Dr Peace N Ani), Former Vice Principal Academics( Dr Onyia Helen N.) and their myriads of loyal academic and non academic staff to achieve the feat-ENUGU STATE COLLEGE OF NURSING SCIENCES, ENUGU STATE with the approval of the regulatory bodies [Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), 2024]
